Chapter 9: Prove It

Seren's POV

I woke up with my face against a vampire's arm, and the Alpha's voice in the courtyard.

Evander was already on his feet.

"Stay behind me," he said.

"Not a chance."

I pulled on the green dress over my sleep shirt and went down the stairs beside him.

The great hall doors stood open to the gray morning.

Ronan Calderwood walked in with the paper in his hand and three of his wolves at his back.

Camryn came in behind them in a white coat, and her eyes went straight to me.

She looked like she had not slept.

"Forgive the hour," Ronan said. "Pack law gives me the right to see a forming bond with my own eyes, and it can't be put off."

"What is the inspection?" Evander asked.

"A simple one." Ronan smiled. "Mates feel their bond. They can't hide how they stand together, or how they look, or what they do when they think nobody is watching."

"We're not hiding anything," I said.

"Then you won't mind if my wolves watch."

One of them took up a spot by the fireplace. Another stood by the door.

Camryn drifted to the foot of the stairs with her arms crossed.

"Mates can't keep their hands off each other," she said sweetly. "I said so myself yesterday."

She tilted her head at Evander.

"So go on. Show us. Kiss her."

Nobody said anything.

Evander's jaw tightened.

I felt it before I saw it, that tiny shift in the air between us, and I understood what she was asking.

If we refused, it was a lie.

If we tried and it looked like acting, it was a lie.

I turned and looked at him.
