Chapter 14: The Call

Tobias's POV

The only signal in the camp lives on the ridge, forty minutes up through the birches.

I climbed it that night with the snow squeaking under my boots.

Nina was asleep in the tent below, her back to the door.

She had not told me to leave.

She had told me she would decide next time.

I took that as an opening and kept it.

At the top, the phone buzzed in my pocket with an American number I did not know.

I should have let it ring out.

"Hartley."

"Is she there?" The voice was hoarse and wrecked. "Put her on."

"Alexander."

"I got your number from the department."

He breathed hard.

"Whatever she did to me, make her undo it."

I looked down at the dark valley and the one small light that was my tent.

I had spent weeks deciding how I would speak to this man if I ever had the chance.

"She did nothing to you," I said. "You did it to her."

"I'm the Alpha's son."

"You're a man who held her hand before every fight for five years. Do you know why?"

"It settled my wolf."

"It did," I said. "Because it was hers."

He did not answer.

I told him all of it, in plain words, standing on a rock in the snow.

I told him what a moon-blooded wolf is and what a mate can take from one.

I told him the rejection had stopped the supply, and his wolf had been starving ever since.

"You never won a fight that she didn't win for you," I said. "Your cousin knew it before you did."

"That's a lie."

"Then shift."

"I can't."
