Chapter 7: Carriage Home
The royal carriage has black blinds and a driver who is paid never to look back.
I knew that because Cassian told me so, politely, as he handed me up the step.
He sat opposite me with the baker's second page folded in his coat.
We had been rolling for three minutes when I started laughing.
"What?" he said.
"Nothing. I can't stop."
"Give them to me," he said. "You don't have to hold yourself together now."
I put my hands in his, and they shook in his palms.
They wouldn't stop shaking, and it wasn't the cold this time.
It was the other thing, the one that had nothing to do with cold.
Seven years of gloves, and now my skin wanted every touch it had missed.
I pulled him forward by the hands until his knees bumped mine.
I looked at him.
He was watching me, steady, with that scar through his eyebrow.
He was breathing.
"You liked it," I said.
"Watching you?"
"The part where you took their charter."
"I liked all of it." His voice was low. "I'm not made of stone."
"No," I said. "You're not."
I slid off the seat onto my knees on the floor of the carriage.
His hands tightened on the leather.
"Idony."
"You said you'd take your time with me. That was yesterday. Today it's my turn."
"The driver."
"Doesn't look back. You told me."
I put both hands flat on his thighs.
The muscle went hard under my palms.
Through his trousers I could see how much he wanted this, and the sight of it dried my mouth and then flooded it.
