Chapter 18: Cher

Dolly's POV

I had a classroom full of second-graders making paper snowflakes, which in south Louisiana is an act of imagination.

At half past three the bell rang, and I stood at the door with my hand on the knob and waved the last child out into the parking lot.

I turned around and Blake Broussard was sitting at my reading table.

He was in a child's chair, with his knees up around his ears and his quilted vest bunched at his chest.

He had his gold St. Christopher in one hand and a paper snowflake in the other, and he smiled at me.

"Cher," he said.

"I hope you don't mind.

"The principal let me in.

"I told her I wanted to see where my sister-in-law spends her days."

I did not shut the door.

I left it wide open on the hall and stood beside it.

"I mind," I said.

"I'd like you to go."

"I will in a minute."

He turned the snowflake over in his thick fingers.

"It's very good work, you know.

"What you do.

"I've always said a teacher is the only honest trade left."

"Monsieur Blake," I said.

"Blake," he said.

"What do you want?" I asked.

He set the snowflake down on the table as carefully as if it were a rare thing.
