Nobody spoke for as long as it takes a lamp to burn down a finger's width.
My father sat on the edge of my desk with the flask in his hand.
Ximun stood behind me with his eyes on the old man's pink hands.
The ledger lay open under the lamp at a page in my sister's upright writing.
"Papa," I said.
"Who put the card in your pocket?"
He looked down at the white card as if it had grown there.
"Idoia," he said.
"When?" I said.
"The Saturday night," my father said.
"The night before."
He wet his lips.
"She came into my study with a glass.
"She said the King would come for a daughter, and I should be ready to say which."
"Which one did she tell you to say?" Ximun said.
"You," my father said, to me.
The word hung in the lamplight.
"She said you were the one who would settle," my father said.
"She said you'd mind the least.
"She said Idoia has the firm, and the middle one has the hospital, and you've got nothing but the ledger.
"She wrote it all down for me.
"The whole speech.
"I only had to read it."
"And you read it," I said.
