Chapter 22: The Loft
The sheep-camp loft stood at the top of the ridge above the compound, a stone barn with a hay door that opened on the whole Snake River plain.
He took me there on Sunday night, after the dinner crews had gone home and the dogs were asleep.
The first hot wind of the year was lifting off the sagebrush.
We drove the sheep-camp road without lights, the way we had once before, and I put my bare feet up on the dash.
He laughed.
It had stopped being a rare thing.
The loft was a plain square room above the empty lambing pens.
An old black iron bed stood in the corner with a rope mattress and a gray blanket, and a lantern hung from a hook.
The hay door stood open.
It was the first night of June that was warm enough, and the stars lay thick over the plain from one edge to the other.
I stood in the doorway and looked out.
I felt him behind me.
He did not touch me.
"I want to tie you," I said.
He was quiet for a moment.
"With what?" he said.
"Your tie."
I turned around and held up the black silk.
I had taken it from the chapel pew on Thursday night, folded, and carried it in my pocket ever since.
"To the bed," I said.
He looked at the silk, and his eyes went black.
"Where?" he said.
"Here, under the stars.
"Where nobody can hear and nobody will come."
"Why?"
"Because I want to see you not move," I said.
"Because I want you to say everything out loud.
"And because I want to know that you trust me."
He took off his shirt.
