Chapter 19: Ice Out
"Your tie," I said.
He took it off.
It was a dark blue silk tie, the one he had worn to the Petrovic dock on the day the Halloran man was led out of the shed.
He held it out to me in the front hall of the lake house, with the door still open behind him and the wind coming in off the lake.
I had come back to the lake house that afternoon, a day after the Petrovic dock.
I had stood on the porch and told him I would sleep in the house, in my own room, with the bolt on the inside.
I had told him nothing else.
He had said, "Thank you," and gone to make tea.
Now it was evening, and the stone hearth was lit, and the whole house smelled of woodsmoke and cedar.
I took the tie and wrapped it around my fist.
"Upstairs," I said.
I locked the door behind us.
The brass bolt slid home with a small, clean sound.
He stood in the middle of my room under the sloped ceiling and watched me turn.
"Take off your shirt," I said.
He did.
"Sit on the bed."
He sat on the edge of the quilt with his hands on his knees.
I took his right wrist, with the watch, and then his left, and put them together in front of him.
