Chapter 24: Mrs. Kralj, Again
The first ore boat of the season whistled at six in the evening, and I said yes again on the rock.
I had not planned it for that hour.
I had planned it for noon, and then for four, and then the boat had been late.
I stood at the edge of the shelf above the lake with Baba's ring on my finger and the wind pulling at my hair.
The ice was gone.
It had gone out in the night, the last of it, a long white raft sliding beyond the point into the open lake.
The water lay clear and dark and bright in the evening light.
A long gray freighter was coming in around the point, slowly, with her lights lit and her deck loaded.
She sounded her horn.
It rolled across the water and up the rock, deep and low, and I felt it in my chest.
Xander stood beside me in his black coat.
He had not been told anything.
I had only said: come to the rock at six.
He had come, and waited, and not asked.
"That is the first boat," he said.
"Yes," I said.
He looked at her for a long time, steadily, the way a man looks at a face he knows.
He was not afraid.
"I want to say something," I said.
I took the steno pad out of my pocket.
It was a new one.
I had bought it that morning in a stationery shop on Superior Street.
I had written in it for an hour at the kitchen table, with Baba reading the paper across from me.
I opened it.
Xander looked down.
"It's in shorthand," he said.
"It's my vow," I said.
"I'll read it to you.
"It's the only way I know to say it."
He did not speak.
