Chapter 17: Blindfold
He was standing at the window of my room when I came out of the bathroom, with his back to me and the shutters closed to a thin gray slit.
It was Thursday night, and the house was as quiet as a church.
I had spent the day on the dock phone and the bank phone and in Nonna's kitchen going over the order of the pages.
My head was full of numbers, and my whole body ached with them.
"You're still dressed," I said.
"I thought you might want it that way," Luca said.
He turned around.
He had a strip of black silk in his hand, the length of his forearm.
It was one of his ties, the one I had pulled out of his collar on the stairs.
"Tomorrow I have to be sharp," I said.
"I know."
"Tonight I don't want to think."
"I know that too," he said.
He held the tie out, across both palms.
"Tell me what to do with it."
My mouth went dry.
I crossed the floor in my robe and took the silk from his hands.
It was soft and slightly warm, and it smelled of him.
"Sit on the bed," I said.
"Hands on your knees."
He sat.
He put his hands on his knees and looked up at me, and I saw the muscle jump in his jaw.
I stood in front of him and held the tie up so he could see it.
Then I turned it over and held it out to him again.
"Not you," I said.
"Me."
His eyes went black.
"Put it on me," I said.
"Over my eyes.
"Tie it at the back, and not too tight."
He rose.
He was very close, and I could hear him breathing.
He took the silk and laid it across my face, and everything went dark and soft.
His fingers moved against my hair, careful and slow, gathering it out of the way.
