I came down to the kitchen at six in the morning with my suitcase.

I had not slept.

He was already at the table, in the chair at the head, with his hands around a cold cup.

He had not slept either.

He stood when I came in, and the knee made him catch the table.

"Thalia."

"Sit down," I said. "I'm going to say it once, and I'm going to say all of it."

He sat.

I put the suitcase by the door.

"You watched me forty-one times," I said.

"Yes," he said.

"The worst hour of my life, on a screen in your boathouse," I said.

"Yes," he said.

"Then I came to your loft and told you what I am," I said. "The thing I have never said to a living person. And you listened, and you already had her on the tablet."

"Yes," he said.

"You let me think I was telling you something."

"You were," Aris said. "I did not have that."

"You had the rest. You had the part you could use."

My voice did not rise.

It never does.

"You bought a weapon," I said. "A girl who said no once, and might say it again."

"Thalia."

"You put me in a room with a lock and you were kind to me," I said. "Every kind thing was a buyer's reasoning. I'd have done it myself. I did it for nine years."
