Chapter 16: The Dive

I brought him the next afternoon, to the boathouse loft.

It rained.

The diver sat at the chart table with his hands between his knees.

The old man sat across from him with the stove going and the dog at his boot.

I stood at the window.

Eleni waited outside on the pier under an umbrella, and no one else was there.

"Tell it," Aris said.

The diver breathed in.

"Dimitri found it in the fall," he said.

"Two crates under the sponge in the hold of the Saint Marina, behind a false bulkhead," he said. "He opened one with his knife. He took a picture on his phone."

He swallowed.

"He said, my father's boats," the diver said. "He said it three times."

The old man's face did not move.

"He told Costa," the diver said. "That morning on the dock. I was standing there."

"He said, I'm going to tell Pop tonight," the diver said. "Costa said, let me tell him, it should come from family. Dimitri said no."

"Why did he say no?"

"He said you'd want to hear it from him," the diver said.

"He said you never answered when the sheds were loading," he said. "He said it fondly."

Aris closed his eyes.

"We dived on the wreck at Anclote Key that afternoon," the diver said. "To check the old pots."
