My Father Sold Me to His Oldest Enemy to Play House, and the Old Man Bought the Only Witness Against Him novel · Chapter 8 of 24
Chapter 8: Coffee Hour
The cold front came through on the last night of January and took the power with it.
I sat on the bed in the room over the kitchen.
The bolt was thrown and the chair was under the handle.
I listened to the wind take the shutters.
It was the third week I had slept behind that lock.
I had not once been woken by a Mavrakis car.
At two in the morning something heavy fell in the house below.
It was a body, not a branch.
Then came a thin old voice, calling in Greek for the Mother of God.
I had the chair away and the bolt back before I had decided to.
Eleni lay at the foot of the back stairs with her scarf off and her leg bent under her.
She was swearing at the dark and at the stairs and at her own knees.
I knelt by her.
"Don't move," I said. "Is it the hip?"
"It's the stair," Eleni said. "The stair is old and so am I."
"Leave me," she said. "I will crawl to my bed."
