Chapter 19: The Paper

By eight the next morning, Silvio had found the girl.

He laid a printed copy of the photo on the study desk and put his finger on the new face.

"She's twenty-one," he said. "The niece of the capo who runs the Bronx. Her uncle brought her to Staten Island last Sunday and left her at your father-in-law's table."

I stood by the window with my arms crossed.

"He's giving her a room?"

"He's giving her a chair."

"The cardigan is Gemma's," I said. "He's dressed her in it."

"It's a message," Luca said.

He sat behind the desk in a white shirt, with his cuffs buttoned.

His eyes had not left the photo.

"Aurelio is telling the families he has a guest again. That the old arrangement is still open. That a man can send a daughter to Costanzo's table and she will be kept warm."

"And the Bronx capo is one of the five chairs," I said.

"Yes."

"So he's buying his votes with girls."

"Not buying," Silvio said. "Letting them think he's the safe house."

I looked at the girl's smile.

She was twenty-one and had no idea what her uncle had done.

"Does she know she's a hostage?"

"I doubt she knows she's a guest," Luca said.

I rubbed my face.

Four of Luca's capos had arrived at nine, and I could hear their voices in the hall, deep and low.
