Raffaela's POV
Gemma walked the length of the hall alone, in my old coat, with flour on her sleeve.
Nobody stopped her.
She stopped in the open floor between the dais and the two chairs, and turned to face the room.
"My name is Gemma Vannelli," she said. "I'm twenty-four. I was taken outside a bookshop in Locust Valley a year ago last February."
The eldest of the old men set down his glass.
"You were a prisoner, signorina?"
"For one week." Her voice shook once, and steadied. "They locked the door, and a man sat outside. I was very frightened."
I saw Luca's hands clench behind his back.
"And after the week?"
"I asked Aurelio Costanzo if I could stay."
A rustle went through the benches.
"I asked in the third month," Gemma said. "He told me the war needed me held. He said if I went home, my brother would burn his house. He said, Gemma, you're safer here."
She lifted her chin.
"I believed him, because I wanted to. He was kind. He let me cook, and he let me read, and he put me at his table on Sundays, and he gave me a bedroom with a window seat."
