Chapter 31: The Wedding Night, Again

"Yes," I said, and took the key out of my bodice. "Come up."

The stairs were the old curved staircase with the red runner and the brass rail.

I climbed ahead of him with my train over my arm.

I heard him behind me on every step, close, quiet, waiting to be told.

At the top, I unlocked the door of the room.

It had been the bridal room since my grandmother's day.

A brass bed stood against the far wall, the old kind, with tall rails at the head and the foot.

Someone had turned down the white cover and lit a lamp with a rose-colored shade.

Rosalba, I thought.

There was a vase of lemon blossom on the dresser, and a bottle of wine with two glasses.

There was no one in the hall, no music, no men.

Below us the party hummed through the floor, faint and warm.

I shut the door and turned the key.

"Stay there," I said.

Luca stood in the middle of the carpet in his black suit.

His sleeves were still rolled to the elbow, and a white rose sat in his lapel.

He stayed.

I walked around him once, slowly, with my hand trailing across his back.

"Take off your jacket."

He took it off and laid it on the chair.

"The tie."

He undid it.

It was grey silk, dull and heavy, the one from the night I had asked to be tied.

He must have chosen it on purpose.

He held it out to me.

I took it.

"You remembered," I said.

"I remember everything."

"Good." I wound it once around my fist. "Then you remember what you did with it."

His throat moved.

"Yes."

"Take off your shirt. Slowly."

He undid the buttons from the top.

He did it with the same care he had used for the wedding vows, watching my face.

When the shirt came off his shoulders and dropped, he stood bare to the waist in the lamplight, the scar white under his ribs.

I put my palm flat on his chest.

His heart was pounding.

"Trousers and shoes," I said. "Then the bed."

He obeyed.

When he stood naked by the brass rail, hard and flushed and trembling very slightly, he looked at me and said nothing at all.

He had learned how.

I took his wrist.

I raised his arm up to the rail and wound the silk twice around it.

Then I took the other arm and tied them together, to the brass.
