Chapter 16: The Clause
Clarice's sitting room was on the second floor, at the front, with a view of the oaks and a desk that had belonged to her husband.
She locked the door behind us and put the key in her bra.
"I haven't done that since 1974," she said, and sat down in the wing chair.
I had pulled on yesterday's skirt and Beau's sweater.
I did not sit.
On the desk lay a leather folder, and in the folder a stack of paper, with a clip on top.
"Oskar's will," said Clarice. "The whole of it, not the copy Winston keeps in the study. My husband had two lawyers draw it, and he did not trust either one."
"Does Beau know you have it?"
"Beauregard knows what I told him, which was one paragraph." She folded her hands on her cane. "I'm about to tell you the rest, and I want you to hear the whole thing before you decide to hate me."
"Ma'am?"
"Read page six. The paragraph I've marked."
I picked up the will.
It was dense and old-fashioned, in the language of men who billed by the word.
The marked paragraph said that the controlling shares would vest in Beauregard Oskar Ravenel upon the three hundred and sixty-fifth day of a marriage contracted before his thirty-fifth birthday, provided the spouse were present and the marriage subsisting on that day.
It said the shares would vest in no other way.
It said that in any other event they would pass to the testator's son, Winston.
"That's what he told me," I said slowly. "That I had to be in the room."
