Chapter 31: Terms of Surrender

We went back to the old boathouse on the Isle of Hope at dusk, the same shell road, the same stove, the same table of charts.

Beau lit the lamp and the kettle out of habit.

The sloop stood on its lift outside, bare of canvas, with its brass hatch open to the evening.

I had a folded sheet of legal paper in the pocket of my dress.

"Sit," I said.

"Where?"

"On the couch. Hands on your knees."

He sat.

He looked up at me with his grey eyes, steady and a little wary, in the dusty lamplight.

I took out the paper and unfolded it.

"These are my terms," I said. "I wrote them in Opal's kitchen after the dinner. I'm going to read them, and you are going to say yes to every one."

"Yes."

"You haven't heard them," I said.

"I'll say yes to all of it."

"That's not how terms work, Mr. Ravenel."

His mouth twitched.

"Then read," he said.

"One." I cleared my throat. "You tell me what you want. In words, out loud, every day, even when it's small. Even when you think I'll say no."

"Yes."

"Two. You ask. For anything. For me to stay, for me to come home, for the last biscuit. A man who never asks has decided the answer for the other person, and I won't be decided for."
