My Father Went to Prison for Their Money, So I Married Their Heir novel · Chapter 5 of 32

Chapter 5: The Check

The board dinner was held in the glass room above the terminal, where the whole container yard lay under floodlights below the windows.

Beau had told me about it that morning, across the kitchen island, in the voice he used for weather.

"Eight directors and their spouses. My father will do something."

"What?" I said.

"I don't know. That's why he's doing it in front of people."

I wore the black dress Clarice had left on my bed with a note that said, Armor.

I sat where the place card told me.

Beau sat on my right.

He had not touched me since the courthouse, and I had noticed that I noticed.

Winston waited until the plates were cleared.

Then he rose and tapped his glass, and the whole table went quiet to listen.

"A family dinner, even if the family is new," he said, and smiled down the table at me. "I'd like to welcome Sabra properly. This has been a hard few weeks for her, and for Beau, and I want her to know there is no resentment in this house."

The directors murmured.

He drew an envelope from inside his blazer and slid it down the white tablecloth, past the salt, past the bread, until it stopped against my water glass.

"It's a gift," he said. "A start."

I opened it.

It was a cashier's check made out to Sabra Braswell for two million dollars.

The paper was heavy and had a watermark.

I could feel eight pairs of eyes on the back of my neck.

"What's it for?" I said.

"Whatever you need, my dear." Winston's voice was gentle. "A house of your own. A fresh start somewhere that isn't here. I'd only ask that you go and take it by Christmas."
