Chapter 9: Casseroles
Nobody at the shed door ever came in.
The only thing anyone said to me about Thursday was that Milan's inventory had run long.
By Saturday there were five casseroles in my father's kitchen, and a church lady was standing in the middle of it, rearranging them.
"This is the broccoli rice," she said, tapping the foil. "That's the ham and noodle. You eat the ham and noodle first, it won't keep."
"Yes, ma'am," I said.
"You're thin, Carly. Your mother was thin at the end, too, God rest her."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine, you've had your father die." She patted my cheek with a hand that smelled of Jergens lotion.
"Where's Milan Drabik been?"
I kept my face still.
"Fixing the roof," I said. "It's finished."
"He's a good man. A good friend to Frank."
She took her purse off the table.
"You let him look after you. A girl alone in a house like this."
She left, and the screen door banged.
I put the ham and noodle in the oven.
I could not stop thinking about his hands.
