Chapter 19: One Punch

Victoria was out of the car before it had finished rolling.

She ran across the gravel in her cardigan and slippers, with her hair down and her phone in her hand.

Her face was already wet.

"Kent! Oh, thank God. I saw you leave, and your location said here, and I thought he'd."

She stopped three feet from him.

She saw the box.

For one half second her face was completely empty.

Then it filled again, all at once, with fear.

"Where did you get that?" she whispered.

"Your bathroom trash." Kent held it out. "The seal's still on it, Vic."

"I took the test at the clinic."

"You said you took four."

"At the clinic, I mean, they gave me four, and I."

"The box is full."

"Somebody put it there!"

She spun on Rafe, and her finger shook.

"He's been in my condo. He's been in my things."

"He's been trying to turn you against me for years, don't you see it?"

Behind her, a tow truck turned in off the road and stopped, its amber light turning slowly on the gravel.

The driver climbed down with a clipboard and stood by his cab.

He looked unsure whether he had come to the right place.

Victoria took Kent's face in both hands.

"Look at me," she said softly. "It's your Victoria."

"You know who I am. Do you really think I'd lie to you?"

Kent looked at her.

I watched him want to believe it.

I watched it cost him a great deal to do it, and I watched him pay.

His face crumpled, and he gripped her wrists.

Then he turned his head toward Rafe, with his whole body going stiff.

"You were in her condo," he said.
