Chapter 19: The Dock

On Thursday night Hayes took me down to the water.

Constance had gone back to the city to gather her friends for the gala.

Kendall had driven my father to the shed to sleep.

The old house was ours for the first time, and Hayes could not stay in it.

The dock behind the lawn was gray and soft with rot, and at the end of it a small white sailboat rocked on its lines.

"That's the one from the photograph," I said.

"It's the one he taught me in."

He stepped down onto the deck and held out his hand.

I took it, and the boat dipped under us.

The Sound was black and flat, and the lights of Long Island lay far off on the other shore.

He sat down on the cockpit bench with his elbows on his knees and looked at his hands.

"I don't know what to do with what she did to my father."

"You don't have to do anything yet."

"I want to hit something."

"Then hit me," I said. "With your mouth."

He looked up.

I stood over him and took off my coat and dropped it on the deck.

I pulled my sweater over my head and undid my bra and let it fall.

The air was cold on my nipples, and I watched his eyes go dark.

"Joanna."

"Tonight I'm in charge."

I pushed him back against the bench, knelt between his knees and opened his belt.

He lifted his hips, and I pulled his jeans down to his thighs.

His cock was already hard, curved up against his belly, and I wrapped my hand around the base and put my tongue flat against the underside.

He hissed through his teeth.

I licked him from root to tip, slowly, and sucked the head into my mouth.
