Chapter 22: The Car Park

I caught Kendall at the club's side entrance, with her green suitcase and her car keys already out.

I was still in the navy gown, and I ran the last forty feet with my shoes in my hand.

"Kendall!"

She stopped and did not turn around.

"Don't," she said. "Please. I can't have you be nice to me tonight."

"Then I'll be rude."

"Jo."

"You walked out on the best night of your life without telling me. That's rude. I'm just matching it."

She turned.

Her mascara had run down both cheeks, and her red hair had come half out of its pins.

"They took Brandon out in front of everyone," she said. "My videos are in a police evidence room. Every person in that ballroom saw a woman in a green dress on a slide."

"They saw Constance fall."

"They saw me."

"Kendall."

"I don't know how to walk into a room again," she said, and her voice broke on it. "I did it for you, and I'd do it again, and I can't stand it."

I put my shoes down on the asphalt.

I took her suitcase out of her hand and set it on the ground, and I put both arms around her, ribs and all.

She went stiff for one second.

Then she folded into me.

"You are not leaving," I said into her hair.

"I'm so tired."

"I know."

"I slept with him three times, Jo. On purpose. For you."

"And you took a punch for me, and you stole a diary for me, and you kept it quiet for a week while I called you names." I held on tighter. "Nobody in that ballroom is going to say one word about you that I don't hear."
