The lawyer left, and the front door shut behind him.

I stood in the study with my collar open and my hands still shaking.

Hayes read the notice a second time.

"She gets to inspect us," I said.

"She'll move into the house and watch. She'll look for a bad kiss."

"Then she'll find a good one."

He did not smile.

"Joanna. Before she gets here, we have to settle September."

I had been waiting for it for two days.

"Go ahead," I said.

"I saw them at the hotel. I followed Brandon out to the parking garage and told him to tell you himself, or I would."

"What did he say?"

"He laughed. He said you knew and didn't care. He said you were marrying into the family for a roof over your father's head."

"And you believed him."

"I didn't want to."

"But you did."

Hayes put the notice down on the desk.

"You stayed," he said. "Two months, you stayed. You went to the dress fittings. You wore the ring. I figured if a woman knew and kept wearing the ring, she had her reasons."

I felt the heat climb my neck.

"My reasons were six million dollars."

"I didn't know that."

"My reason was that my father signed away his house in a kitchen and never read the clause."

"I know that now."

"I spent two months in a lawyer's office hunting for a hole in a contract. I cried in a bridal shop because I couldn't find one."

"Joanna."

"You thought I stayed for the money."
