Chapter 23: New Terms

Sadie's POV

The dress had sixty buttons down the back, and he undid them one at a time.

We were in the bedroom of the tower, with the harbor lights on the glass and my burnt hand wrapped in white gauze.

He stood behind me.

I had my palms flat against the window.

"Say when," Ezra said.

"Keep going."

His knuckles moved down my spine with each button, and the cool air followed his hands.

I counted to twenty and lost count.

"New terms," I said.

"I'm listening."

"No year."

His hands stopped.

"Not a countdown," I said. "I don't want the exit drafted. Tell your lawyer to burn it."

"Sadie."

"My name stays Brannigan. The boxes stay mine. I get the last word on every contract with my name on it, and you read every page, out loud, to me."

"Agreed," he said, and his voice was rough.

"And I decide when."

"Always."

"Then now."

He finished the last button.

The dress fell off my shoulders and slid down my hips and lay in a heap on the floor.

I turned around.

I was naked except for my underwear and the gauze on my hand.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Take your clothes off," I said.

He did it faster than I had ever seen him do anything.

When he was bare, hard, and flushed, I put my uninjured hand on his chest and walked him back, and he let me, until his legs hit the edge of the bed.

"Sit."

He sat.

I knelt on the mattress in front of him and pulled my underwear off, and he put his hands on my hips.

"I want your mouth," I said.
