Chapter 5: The Kind One

Ezra moved first.

He took two steps to the window, turned his back on the room and looked out at the harbor.

By the time Daphne opened the door, he looked like a man who had been standing there all morning.

"Sadie?"

Daphne stopped on the threshold.

Her eyes were red, her honey-blond hair was pinned up in a hurry, and she held a paper bag against her chest.

Then she saw Ezra, and her whole face went careful.

"Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone was in here."

"Mr. Maddox is checking the exits," I said. "Gerald's orders."

"Security," Ezra said without turning around.

"Right." Daphne nodded too quickly. "Of course."

She shut the door and came to me with both hands out.

"Sadie. I have to tell you something, and I've been sick about it all morning."

I let her take my hands.

They were cold and damp.

I had held those hands through a broken arm, two funerals and a prom night in a bathroom.

For twelve years I had never once doubted them.

"Colby is not a good man," Daphne said. "I should have told you. He called me last night, drunk, and said horrible things about you, and I went to his apartment to get him to stop, and..."

Her voice broke.

"And he didn't stop."

I looked at her.

I waited for her to say it.

She did not.
