Chapter 13: The Landing

My father came down the stairs slowly, one hand on the rail.

He was in his navy suit at two in the morning, and not one hair of his silver head was out of place.

"Sweetheart," he said. "Marisol. You two look like you could use a chair."

Marisol took a step back until the wall stopped her.

She did not say a word, and she did not look at him.

"You signed," I said.

My father looked at me with real tenderness.

"I did," he said. "I stood on those courthouse steps and I was proud of them both."

"You let me get engaged to a married man."

"I let you get engaged to the best man I had."

He said it the way he said everything, warm and reasonable.

"Why?" I said.

"Because your mother's shares were going to walk out of this family."

He came down the last stair and stood in front of me.

"You have wanted to sell the Grand since you were twenty-six. You have a deck. I have read the deck."

"It's a renovation plan."

"It is a plan to sell the building your mother stood in at nineteen, holding a mop, and promised she would own."

His voice did not rise.

"Your mother built this lobby with her hands. You would have given it to a developer for a fund and a ribbon-cutting."

"So you bought me a husband."

"I found you one who would listen to me."

He said it plainly.

It was the plainest thing he had ever said to me, and I understood that he had never once considered it a sin.

"The trust says the vote goes to him on the day of the ceremony," I said.
