Chapter 24: Fourteen Oh Eight
I opened the envelope in the middle of the lobby, because the young man had been told to wait.
There were three things inside.
The first was a single sheet of heavy cream paper, typed, with a signature at the bottom in blue ink that slanted uphill.
The second was a note on hotel stationery in Marisol's round hand.
The third was a small hard shape wrapped in a cocktail napkin.
I unwrapped the napkin first.
It was my engagement ring, dry now, with a faint stain of champagne in the setting.
I read the note.
"I took it out of the glass before they cleared the table," Marisol had written. "It's yours, so you can decide what it is."
The note went on.
"Page two was in Preston's desk. He photocopied the whole trust in March because he never trusted Henrik. I should have shown you in the stairwell. Instead I'm showing you now. M."
I read the typed sheet standing up.
It was the second page of my mother's trust, the one she had told me to read.
It said that the trustee was Ingrid Lindholm, daughter of the grantor, effective on her thirtieth birthday, with or without a husband.
It said that any earlier paper naming another trustee was void.
It said nothing at all about a wedding.
At the bottom, over my mother's signature, a hospital notary had stamped the date.
It was nine days before she died.
My father's lawyers had written the first page, the one they showed everyone.
