Chapter 18: The Chair

Alexander's POV

At noon I walked into the partners' conference room and every chair was full but mine.

Braden sat on the long side with his jaw shaved clean and his eyes red.

Lenora sat next to him in her cream blazer, with her right hand under the table.

The senior partner was at the head with a legal pad.

Nobody looked at me until I sat.

"Alexander," said the oldest partner, a woman who had run the tax group for thirty years. "We're told you've asked for the floor."

"I have."

"Before you do," Braden said, "I want it noted that Tilda Harlan is not herself, and the managing partner's judgment has been affected."

"Noted," I said.

That surprised him. He had braced for a fight.

I put my hands flat on the table.

"I have three things to say, and the first costs me the most. In the last two weeks I have become involved with Tilda Harlan. I'm telling you now so no one can say I hid it."

The room made a noise.

Lenora's eyes went to the senior partner.

"That is a serious breach," the tax partner said.

"It is. She works at my front desk, and I should have come to you the day it began." I kept my voice level. "So here is the second thing. I am resigning the managing chair, effective at the end of Saturday's gala."
