Chapter 14: The Offer
My mother arrived at eleven in a camel coat, with Spencer's father a step behind her.
I had never seen him anywhere but a ballroom.
Without a room to work, he was a heavy, tired man with a briefcase.
Rhys opened the door, and my mother walked past him without a glance.
"Estelle."
"Mom."
She looked at the one chair, the bare shelves and my sock feet.
"You can't live like this."
"I'm fine."
"You're pregnant in a rented room."
"It's his flat," I said. "And it isn't rented."
Rhys closed the door and stayed beside it, with his arms folded.
Spencer's father set his briefcase on the counter.
"Miss Cadwalader. I'll be brief. This has been a difficult month for both families."
"It has."
"Hugh has made mistakes. I won't defend them." He had clearly rehearsed it. "But the Lyle and Cadwalader companies are still the right match. My son is prepared to forgive the scene at the hotel. The child can be raised as his. Nobody outside this room needs to know where it came from."
"Nobody outside this room," I said.
"Exactly."
My mother nodded slowly.
"It's a good offer, Estelle. It's more than good. After what you did to that boy, I'd have asked for a lot less."
"After what I did to him."
"You humiliated him in front of three hundred people."
"He was in bed with Teddy."
Her face closed.
"That's a private matter."
"It was private until Hugh decided to sell me."
"Don't use that word."
