I went down the stairs two at a time and straight past the dessert plates.

Hugh was in the doorway of the dining room with a coffee cup in his hand.

"Study," I said. "Now."

He looked at my face and set the cup on the sideboard.

Our father's study had not changed in four years.

His reading lamp, his leather chair, the model of a cargo ship on the shelf.

Hugh shut the door.

"Teddy talked to you," he said.

"Teddy told me what you said at the lake house in March."

"I said we'd handle it after the wedding."

"You said it to them. You never said it to me."

Hugh sat on the edge of the desk and rubbed his eyes.

"Estelle. Sit."

"I'm not sitting. You knew."

"Yes."

He said it flatly, without a flicker, and my legs nearly went.

I had been hoping for a lie.

"Why?"

"Because Dad left us fourteen million in debt and a firm that was three quarters of the way to bankruptcy." He spoke quietly. "The Lyles' money is what keeps the lights on. The merger closes Friday. If you marry Spencer, we're safe. If you don't, the lenders call everything in and Mom loses the house."

"You could have told me."

"You'd have said no."

"I would have said no!" My voice cracked off the bookshelves. "He was sleeping with our little brother, Hugh."

"He'd have stopped."

"Would he?"

"Men get over these things."
