Chapter 11: Through the Dome

They locked me in the dome room before the sun came up.

Saverio did it himself.

He didn't say anything else.

He turned the key twice, and I heard him test the handle.

I waited until his footsteps were gone.

Then I made myself think about only one thing.

Sunday, eight o'clock.

I pulled the phone out of my apron.

Forty-one percent battery.

No signal.

My old number had been canceled years ago.

But there was a little row of wifi bars in the corner of the screen, searching.

Saverio's network came up.

It wanted a password.

I knew it.

He'd used the same one for everything for two years.

My birthday, and the word stella.

The bars went full.

I unwound the bandage from my left foot.

The card was still there, soft and curved from my skin.

C. Amato.

I typed the number into a new message with my thumb shaking.

Then I deleted what I'd typed and started again.

This is Rosaria Morreale. I'm locked in the Sciarra villa at Mondello.

On Sunday morning a car from a clinic in Cefalù is coming to take me. Saverio holds my power of attorney.

I read it once.

I added one more line.

I'm not sick.

I sent it.

Then I opened the old thread from March ninth and took a picture of the screen with the phone's own camera.

I sent that too.

Keep this for me, I wrote. In case.

I put the phone face down on the floor beside me and pulled my knees up.

The sun came up through the dome and moved across the bed.

I watched it.

The phone buzzed at nine fourteen.
