Chapter 24: The Suitcase
He kissed me back slowly.
The towel slid off my shoulders and hit the floor.
Neither of us looked down.
His hand came up into my wet hair and held my head the way he'd held the towel, carefully.
I didn't.
I pressed closer, and my soaked shirt soaked his.
He made a low sound against my mouth.
The slow went out of the kiss.
Then he lifted his head and looked at me, close, with the rain still running off my hair onto his hands.
"Are you sure?"
"I asked you what you wanted, that first morning."
"I remember."
"You said you wouldn't touch me while I was running from him."
"I remember that too."
"I'm not running."
The kitchen clock ticked over the stove.
He didn't move for three ticks.
Then he put both hands on my waist, over the wet cotton, and backed me into the edge of the kitchen table.
The bread board rattled.
He kissed my jaw, my throat, the hollow under my ear, and I heard myself make a sound I hadn't made in three years.
"Avvocato," he said into my neck.
"Don't call me that now."
"Why not?"
"Because I'll start arguing with you."
"Argue." His thumbs moved over my ribs, slow, through the wet shirt. "I like losing to you."
I got my hands under his shirt.
His back was warm, and he went still under my palms.
"I've wanted you since clause nine," he said. "I told you that at this table."
"You told me you wouldn't touch me."
"I'm asking now."
"Ask properly."
He lifted his head.
His broken nose was an inch from mine, and his eyes were very dark.
"May I take you upstairs, Rosaria?"
"Yes."
He took my hand and turned off the kitchen light.
We went up the stone stairs in the dark.
He stopped me on the landing and kissed me against the cold wall until my knees went loose.
I laughed into his mouth, and he laughed back, and then he pulled me up the last steps.
His room was at the end of the passage, under the eaves.
There was a window in the roof, a small square of old glass.
The rain had stopped.
Through it I could see a handful of stars between the clouds.
It wasn't a dome, only a window.
He closed the door behind us.
He didn't turn on a lamp.
The only light in the room was the little roof window, gray and wet with the last of the rain, and the handful of stars behind it.
