Chapter 31: My Own Hand

Nobody in the chapter hall moved.

The Trapani men had stopped at the door.

The Sciarra uncles stood behind their chairs.

My mother had her hand over her mouth again.

I walked back across the stone floor until I stood in front of him.

Close enough to see that his hand was shaking.

I didn't take it.

"On the coast road you gave me two choices," I said. "Donna or lover."

"I know."

"You told me those were my only choices."

"I was wrong. Rosaria, I was..."

"I read every contract to the end, Saverio. You never did."

I put my hand in my jacket pocket.

I took out my grandmother's ring.

The thin gold band. The small square emerald.

The priest's soap had left it clean and bright.

Saverio looked at it, and something came into his face.

He thought it was for him.

He lifted his hand a little higher.

I put the ring on the third finger of my own right hand.

It went over the knuckle easily.

It had always fitted me.

"No," I said.

That was all.
