Chapter 5: Seeking Help

On Monday a girl in my class misspelled a word on purpose.

She wanted to say, "Miss Kruse, my mom says you're not getting married."

"Spell 'necessary,'" I said.

"N-E-C-E-S-S-A-R-Y." She beamed. "But is it true?"

"It's a very good spelling," I said.

At lunch my phone buzzed.

It was a text from Maddie, and it was one line.

"He got to Dr. first. I'm on leave."

I left at 3:35, with my coat half on, and drove to the dental office on Fourth Street.

Maddie was standing next to her Corolla in the parking lot, holding a cardboard box with her stapler and a plant in it.

The plant was a small cactus she called Gary.

"Put the box down," I said.

"Han, don't."

"We're going in."

"He'll cry. He cries when he's scared."

"Good," I said. "Then he'll be honest."

The waiting room had two patients in it, a farmer with a swollen jaw and a boy of about six playing with a plastic dinosaur.

The receptionist, who had worked there thirty years, kept her eyes on her screen.

The dentist came out from the back with his mask pulled down around his chin.

He was a decent man.

You could tell, because he looked at Maddie and then at the floor, ashamed to be seen being decent in an indecent way.

"Hannah," he said. "Maddie. I didn't want to do this in front of people."

"Then let's go in your office," I said.

"There's a patient waiting."

"Then we'll do it here."

He swallowed.

Out of his pocket he took several sheets of paper folded in thirds.

"Brandon came in this morning," he said. "He brought these. He said you've been sending him messages for months, Maddie, and he's worried for you. He said you've been..." He glanced at the boy with the dinosaur and lowered his voice. "Fixated."
