Chapter 29: Make Peace
I looked at him one step above me.
At the gray eyes. At his father's watch.
"I'll wear green," I said.
He laughed, delighted, and went down the steps to the reporters with his hand already out.
The tickets came by courier that night.
A table for eight at the back of the ballroom, with a card from the board chair's office.
Nobody signed it.
On Saturday I was thirty-six weeks.
The doctor had told me to stay off my feet, and I'd promised her I'd sit for most of it.
I bought the dress with Portland money.
Dark green, almost black in the shade, long, cut to fall straight from under the bust.
The bride came over at four and pinned my hair up and left the clip out.
"You look like you own the room," she said.
Ray wore a suit he'd bought for his wife's funeral.
It was tight in the shoulders.
He kept pulling at the cuffs in the car.
Sam drove.
He'd shaved his beard down short and his eye was almost gone.
He didn't talk much on the way.
At a red light he took my hand and turned it over and looked at my nails, grown out ridged and strong.
