Chapter 8: Episodes

The ranger made copies of the call log and the theft report.

"I'm opening a file," she said. "This is federal land. What happened on that shoulder is ours."

"What happens now?"

"Now I find out where that card went."

On Thursday I had a follow-up at the women's clinic at Harborview.

Ray drove me, because Ray drove me everywhere now.

He'd stopped asking if I wanted him to.

The waiting room was full.

Six or seven pregnant women sat in plastic chairs.

A toddler was eating crackers off the carpet.

I signed in and sat down with my boot up on a chair.

I'd been sitting for ten minutes when the door opened and Jared walked in.

He had white peonies in his arms.

My favorite.

He'd bought them for me every anniversary for ten years, and I'd thought it meant he remembered things.

Behind him came a woman in a camel coat holding her phone up at chest height.

I knew her.

She ran his PR. She'd done the launch of my Ironwood line.

"Han," Jared said.

His voice cracked in the middle of it.

Every head in the room turned.

He crossed the room and crouched beside my chair so his face was lower than mine.

"Thank God. I called every hospital in the city. I've been worried sick."

"Get away from me."

"I know. I know you're angry." He put the flowers on the chair beside me. "You walked out of the house on Friday in such a state. I didn't know where you'd gone."

"You know exactly where I went. You left me there."

He looked up at the woman in the camel coat.

Just for a second.

She tilted the phone a little.

"Sweetheart," he said, gently, so everyone could hear, "you've been having a hard time. That's okay. It happens to a lot of women when they're pregnant. I just want to be with you in there."
