Chapter 12: Say When

I did not sleep after his sister hung up.

At eleven I put on my coat over my pajamas, told my sleeping mother's closed door that I would be back, and took my aunt's car across the river.

Tobias lived in a glass and cedar house on the north shore, with one light on over the door.

He opened it before I knocked.

He was in a grey shirt with the sleeves pushed back and the gauze still on his hand.

"Darcy. Is it your mother?"

"No. It's your sister. She called me."

His face changed.

"She called you?"

"She says she's coming to the gala. She says she can only do it in front of people."

He stood very still.

"I'll tell you everything she said," I told him. "But I didn't come to talk."

I stepped past him into the hall and shut the door.

The house smelled of cedar and woodsmoke.

I turned around.

He had not moved.

"Terms," I said. "I have a rule."

"No touching until you say."

"Yes."

"I haven't touched you."

"I know."

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

"If this is pity, tell me now," I said. "If you're doing this because you owe me, or because I'm the one they hurt, or because you want to make up for June, I'm going back to the car."

"It isn't pity."

"Prove it."

"How?"

"Tell me what you want."

He took one slow step toward me.

"I want to take that coat off you," he said, low. "I want you in my bed. I want to hear what you sound like when nobody is watching and nobody is laughing."

My knees were not steady.

"Say it again."

"I've wanted you since Saturday at the altar. Before you took the ring. I sat in the third row and watched you hold your hands still, and I wanted to be the man you looked at."

"Touch me," I said.

His hands were on my face before I finished the word.

He kissed me hard and for a long time.
