Chapter 15: Chosen
Darcy's POV
Tobias told me the condition in my mother's kitchen on Sunday night, standing by the fridge with his coat still on.
"She wants you to read it," he said. "I told her you might say no."
"Did she say what's in it?"
"Four pages. She hasn't shown me."
"Then I'll go and ask her myself."
"I'll drive you."
"You'll drive me," I said. "And you'll wait in the car."
"Terms."
"Terms."
He almost smiled.
On Tuesday he drove me north, and his sister opened the door before I knocked.
She was taller than I had thought, and thinner, with her dark hair in a plain braid and a cane with a worn rubber tip.
Her eyes were the same grey as his.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I asked my brother to ask you. That isn't the same thing."
She stepped back to let me in, and her left leg dragged a little on the boards.
Out in the yard, Tobias sat in his car with the engine off and did not look at the house.
The kitchen smelled of onions.
A big brown dog lay under the table, and it thumped its tail once when I sat down.
"His name is Biscuit," she said. "Don't tell anyone."
"I won't."
She set a mug of tea in front of me.
Then she put four pages on the table and slid them across.
They were handwritten, on yellow lined paper, and they had been crossed out and rewritten so often that the ink had gone through.
I read the first page.
*I was nineteen, and I was quiet. They chose me because I was quiet. They said we're going to see the meteors, and I thought someone had finally asked.*
I kept reading.
By the third page my hands had stopped being steady.
She had written the field, the cold, the hour she woke alone, and the road.
She had written the truck plainly, with the time and the road and the injuries listed.
She had written the clinic, and the video, and the word *please*.
