Chapter 14: Ask Him About the Docks

Fabrizio stood up slowly, and he looked wounded.

"Nerina," he said. "You have been through a great deal this week."

"Don't use that voice on me."

"I'm using the voice of a man who loves your sister." He turned to the table. "Gentlemen, grief breaks people. Her husband's family has her in a house full of strangers, and they have filled her head with papers."

"I have the papers," Ruggiero said.

He crossed the room and laid the lab sheet and the altered clinic report in front of the old doorman.

The doorman read both, and his face gave away nothing.

"The Falsettis bought a clerk," Fabrizio said. "Anyone can buy a clerk. Ask the man who has treated Costanza since she was six."

He looked toward the back wall.

The Albertini clinic doctor had been standing there all evening in a gray suit, with his hands clasped.

He stepped forward, and every capo turned to look at him.

"I have served this family for twenty-six years," he said. "I am fifty-seven years old. I have never falsified a chart."

I looked up at his head.

The number over it read 57.

It did not shake. It simply matched.

I knew what that meant, and my mouth went dry.

"The Albertini report is correct," the doctor said. "The Falsetti sheet is a forgery. Mrs. Falsetti is a frightened girl, and I'm sorry for her."

"Liar," Costanza said from her chair.

He would not look at her.

Two of the capos nodded. One shrugged.

The vote had been eight hands. It was sliding back toward nine.

My mother stood up.

Her chair scraped on the marble, and it was the only sound in the room.

"Sit down, Ilaria," my father said.

"No."

He stared at her. In thirty years I had never heard her say the word to him.
