Chapter 4: The Honeymoon Suite

"Yes," I said.

I didn't even have to think about it.

Henry nodded once.

"Then let's get your things."

The apartment was in a brick building in LoDo, eight blocks from the office.

The lease was in Bryce's name.

I had paid half the rent for two and a half years, sixteen hundred dollars a month, by transfer, on the first.

Henry parked his car at the curb and looked up at the building.

"Do you want me to come up?"

"No. I want to do this by myself."

"I'll be right here."

He turned the engine off and took out his phone, and I knew he'd stay there all night if he had to.

His running shoes were in the middle of the hall where I always tripped on them.

I stepped over them for the last time.

I didn't have much.

Bryce liked the apartment to look like a hotel, so most of my things lived in two drawers and half a closet.

I packed the cream dress first, still in its bag from the store.

Then my jeans, my sweaters, my mother's jewelry box, my books.

I was zipping the second suitcase when the iPad on the kitchen counter lit up.

Bryce's email was still logged in on it, because he never logged out of anything.

The banner said Coral Bay Resort.

Your stay begins today!

I knew that resort. I knew it better than anyone at Dorrance Travel.

In November I had booked us the honeymoon suite there for May.

I paid the $2,400 deposit myself, on my own card, because Bryce said cash was tight that quarter.

I picked up the iPad and opened the email.

Honeymoon Suite. Ocean terrace. Private plunge pool.

Arrival: February 13. Departure: February 17.

Guests: Mr. Bryce Dorrance, Ms. Kylie Chilton.
