Chapter 16: The Garage

Declan's POV

I walked her to her car at eight in the morning with my hand on my gun and my eyes on every pillar.

Hallie would not let me drive her to work.

She had a story-time sign-up at nine and a bag of felt animals, and she said a woman with an FBI escort scared the toddlers.

Her terms said she went where she wanted.

So I followed her down the ramp of the garage on Adams Street, keeping close.

The air smelled of oil and wet concrete.

Our van had been parked at the street entrance since six.

The agent in it had texted me that morning, twice, asking for a coffee order.

It was the only reason I let myself think the place was safe.

"Stop looking at me like that," Hallie said over her shoulder.

"Like what?"

"Like I'm made of glass."

"I'm looking at the pillars."

"You're looking at me."

"I'm looking at both."

She laughed, once, and the sound went straight through me.

I hadn't heard it in four years.

I had written that I would give anything to hear it, in a card Susie posted for me from Ellsworth, and now I had it, and I could not stand that anything stood near it.

Her car was on the second level, in the corner.

She had her keys out.

In the glass of her driver's window, I saw a shape move behind the pillar at my back.

It came out low and fast.

I don't remember deciding.

I turned, and I shoved her sideways into the side of her car with my left arm, hard enough to bruise.

The man's arm came up with a blade in it.

It was a long, flat kitchen knife, the kind you buy in a set.
