Chapter 18: The Guest Book

Susie's sister opened the guest book on Declan's blanket and turned it around so we could read it.

"Every Friday, she made the regulars sign," she said. "Susie wanted to know who'd been in. She said a bar with no memory was just a room."

She put her finger on a line eleven days before the fish fry.

Tom D. Boston. Chowder was great, tell the owner.

The handwriting was square and careful.

I knew it.

I had watched that hand sign my school permission slips for twelve years.

"That's Tommy," I said.

"He sat at the end of the bar with a beer for an hour. Susie liked him. She said he looked lonely."

Declan had gone grey.

"He was looking at the back door," he said quietly. "He scouted it."

"Eleven days before you walked in, Hallie."

"And my father told the wire Tommy had a cold for a week."

Susie's sister straightened.

"There's another thing."

She took out a phone and held it where Declan could see.

It was the video.

I had spent weeks knowing it existed and could not make myself watch it.

There I was, at the bar, with my ring in my hand.

I looked small and furious and sure of myself.

"Don't look at yourself," her sister said. "Look behind you."

She froze it on the window.

Through the glass, in the gravel lot, under a yellow light, a man in a flat cap stood by a grey sedan with a phone at his ear.

In the corner of the screen, small white numbers read 8:41.

"The man who filmed this is a lobsterman," she said. "He thought you'd want to know where you got caught. I never looked at the window until this week."

"That's Tommy waiting," Declan said. "Before anybody said my name."
