Chapter 5: The Wire
By Monday night, Declan had been living in my apartment for two days, and he had not sat down once.
He ate standing at the counter.
He slept on the couch in his boots.
He had taken my phone on Sunday and given it back with a new case, and I had spent twenty minutes before I understood that the case was what he'd used to hide a tracker.
"You read my mail," I said, coming in from work.
"Agents read the mail of anybody in protective custody."
"I'm not in custody. I'm in a two-bedroom with a stranger who is eating my yogurt."
"It's expired."
"It is not expired. I buy it for the children's room."
"It expired Thursday." He dropped the empty cup in the trash. "You don't have to eat in front of me, Ms. Corrigan."
"I live here, Agent Shaw."
Those were the rules: I was Ms. Corrigan, and he was Agent Shaw.
I had never hated two words so much.
The woman who lived across the hall opened her door as I was putting my key in.
She was seventy-eight, wore a quilted bathrobe all day, and had been feeding me for six years.
"Is he the one?" she said, in a whisper that carried to the stairwell.
"Which one?"
"The tall one. The one who doesn't smile."
"That's him."
"Hm." She handed me a covered dish. "Eat. And make him take his boots off. A man who leaves his boots on isn't planning to stay."
I carried the stew inside, and put it on the table, and set out two bowls.
He looked at the second bowl.
"I'm not hungry."
"I didn't ask if you were."
"I'll eat after."
