Chapter 4: Understood

The plane left Teterboro at seven the next morning, and Derrick sat across the aisle with a folder on his knee.

I did not sleep.

I had spent the night in a hotel suite under my mother's name, with my wrist wrapped in ice and the video of Dean on my phone.

It already had four hundred thousand views.

Somebody had cut it down to the best part and written across it: She froze his cards at his baby party.

The comments were split between people cheering and people calling me heartless.

I turned the phone face down.

"Your mother is waiting at the house," Derrick said.

"Is she angry?"

"No," he said. "She's been up since three."

Auchincloss House stands on Ocean Drive in Newport, with a lawn that runs down to the cliff and a flagpole that has flown the family colors for a hundred and forty years.

My mother stood at the top of the steps in a navy suit.

Her dark hair was pulled back and the white streak at her temple caught the morning light.

She came down two steps and stopped.

She looked at my wrist first.

Then she opened her arms, and I walked into them and cried against her shoulder for the first time that day.

She let me.

When I was done, she held me out at arm's length and wiped my face with her thumb.

"Good," she said. "That's out. Now come inside and let me show you something."

The study smelled of coffee and old paper.

On the desk lay four neat stacks of statements.
