Chapter 7: Uncle W.

The apartment on Atlantic Avenue was on the third floor, with a green door that had been painted that spring.

I knocked, and Heidi opened it with the baby on her shoulder.

She looked tired and pale in a gray cardigan, and she did not seem surprised.

"I thought you might come," she said. "Come in. I'll make tea."

Derrick stayed in the hall with his back to the wall.

The apartment smelled of milk and lavender.

There was a crib in the corner of the living room, a rocking chair, and a wall of shelves lined with baby books.

Every one of them had been bought in the last ten months.

Every one of them had been paid for by my family.

I did not sit.

"Three hundred and six," I said.

Heidi stopped with the kettle in her hand.

"Excuse me?"

"Bradford's private phone has called yours three hundred and six times since January."

She set the kettle down very slowly.

Then she laughed, a small broken sound, and sank into the rocking chair.

"Oh, Bethany. You've been looking at his calls."

"Yes."

"I should have told you. I wanted to." She pressed the baby's back with one hand. "Your uncle sat next to me at your birthday three years ago. Nobody had asked me how I was in years. He asked, and he listened."

"He called you every night?"

"When I was scared, yes. When I found out I was pregnant, I was so scared I couldn't breathe." Her eyes filled. "He talked me through it. He said I was like family to him. He's the one who told Dean to look out for me."
