Chapter 17: Ask First

The hut door would not shut, so Lu Qing propped it with the broken stool and called that sensible.

It had begun to rain again.

It came down on the tin roof in a long steady drum.

Meng Yuhe stood in the middle of the floor and listened to it, and it did not hurt.

Lu Qing had set the cot upright, and spread Grandpa's blanket over it, and lit the gas ring for light.

He was talking, as he always did when he was nervous, about the tackle shelf.

Meng Yuhe let him talk until the sentence about the shelf ran out.

Then Lu Qing stood still, with his hands at his sides, and said, "I've got rules."

"I thought you cancelled them," said Meng Yuhe.

"I made new ones. There are two," said Lu Qing. "Do you want to hear?"

"Yes," said Meng Yuhe.

"One. You tell me before you do a thing. Not after."

"Yes."

"Two." Lu Qing's ears were red. "You wait for my word. Every time. And when I say not yet, you don't sulk."

"I've never sulked in my life."

"You sulked at a thermos on the second Saturday," said Lu Qing. "Tell me what you want right now."

Meng Yuhe's mouth went dry.

He crossed the floor and stopped one pace short, as he had learned to stop anywhere near this man.

"I want to kiss you."

"Not yet," said Lu Qing.

Meng Yuhe stopped.

He did not step back, and he did not lean, and he did not let his face change.

He simply stood there and kept his hands where they were.
