Chapter 10: A Million Dollars to Stay Quiet

Helen came through the glass door with her driver two steps behind her carrying a leather folder.

She looked at the scaffolding, at the bare slab and at the work lamp on its stand.

Then she looked at Elias, who had put the tape roll down and moved to stand beside me.

"Mr. Colquitt," she said. "Your father's place on Division was lovely. I'm sorry it didn't work out."

"You made it not work out."

"I made an offer. He took a worse one."

Her smile did not change.

"I'd like ten minutes alone with my daughter-in-law."

"I'm not your daughter-in-law much longer," I said.

"That's what we'll discuss."

Elias looked at me.

I nodded once, and he went across the slab to the elevators and stood with his back against the wall, close enough to hear me if I raised my voice.

The driver set up two folding chairs under the lamp and went back out to the car.

Helen sat and crossed her ankles.

I stayed on my feet.

"The video of you in the restaurant has done more for the Lowell name than my publicist did in a year," she said. "Everyone adores the wronged wife. It's tiresome."

"I'll try to be less adored."

"You can't. That's why I'm here."

She opened the leather folder and slid a long envelope onto the seat of the second chair.
