Chapter 4: Brunch at Lake Forest

Helen's text arrived on Sunday morning, one line, with no greeting.

"Brunch at noon, Lake Forest. Preston will be there. We'll settle this like a family."

I told Nan I wasn't going.

Then I put on the gray dress and went, because the letter was missing, and I wanted to watch Helen's face when she saw me walk in without it.

The house stood at the end of a long gravel drive, white brick with black shutters.

The housekeeper let me in without speaking.

Helen sat at the head of the sunroom table with two women from her garden club on her left.

Preston sat on her right with his coffee untouched and dark circles under each eye.

"Lydia, darling," Helen said. "You came. Sit."

There was a place for me beside Preston, and a card in a silver holder with my name on it in her handwriting.

It said Lydia Lowell.

I sat.

The women from the garden club looked at me and then at their plates.

"Preston has told me how upset you were," Helen said. "We all make scenes, once. Mine was in 1989."

One of the women laughed politely.

"Here is what we've decided," Helen went on. "The foundation dinner is on the thirteenth of December. It's the centennial, three hundred guests, the mayor, the press."
