Margot stood outside the Ironwood gate with a canvas bag at her feet and a guard on each side of her.

She wore a plain brown coat and no jewelry, and her honey hair was tied back with string.

I had never seen her without a gem somewhere on her.

Jasper stayed a step behind me and said nothing, and I was glad.

"Five minutes," I told the guards.

They moved off to the road, and Margot and I faced each other through the iron bars.

"I thought you'd make me ask twice," she said.

"I almost did."

She almost smiled.

"You look tired," she said, and then she heard herself. "That's a habit. I'm sorry."

"Say what you came to say."

She took a long breath.

"I did not come to be forgiven. I know what I'd say if I were you."

"What would you say?"

"That I wore your stones to your face for fifteen years and hugged you in them." She shut her eyes. "I did, Clara. I hugged you at the supper with your own star on my hem."

"Yes, you did."

"Do you want to know why?"

"I want to know why you did it to me, not why you did it."

That stopped her.

She opened her eyes and looked at me for a while.

"Because you never wanted anything," she said. "You never asked about the gems, not once, until you were eight. You went to the barn and the horses. Mama said you didn't care and I could have what you didn't want."

"I did care."

"I know that now."

"I asked Dad that once, when I was eight. He said they hadn't mined many snowflakes."

"I know. I was standing in the hall."
