Chapter 11: Sworn Statement

I took the blue envelope out of the lawyer's hand and opened it right there in the lobby.

"Mrs. Stannard," he said. "You're meant to read that with counsel."

"I'm a quick reader."

The order was three pages long, and the second page was a sworn statement signed by Whitney.

I read it out loud, slowly, so the doorman and the receptionist and two neighbors waiting for the elevator could hear.

"I, Whitney Aldous, declare under penalty of perjury that I have never been inside the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Stannard."

"I have never taken part in any damage to the property of Joanna Doheny."

I looked up.

"You signed this yesterday."

Whitney's face went white.

"The day before, someone paid a concierge two thousand dollars to let a blonde woman up to my bedroom," I said.

"I have his statement. I have the cash receipt. I have the tape of you in the elevator."

"That's..." Whitney began.

"Perjury," I said. "On a sworn page. With a police officer standing right here."

The officer lifted his head.

He took the order out of my hand and read the second page himself.

Then he looked at the lawyer.

"Counsel, did your office file this?"

"We filed on our client's word," the lawyer said, and his voice had gone very thin. "I'm sure there's an explanation."

"I'm sure there is," I said. "Why don't you ask her?"

Bea came through the revolving door at that moment with her laptop under her arm and her hair standing straight up.

"Hi," she said brightly. "I'm the paralegal. I've been listening from the car. I'll file a perjury complaint by lunch."
